Dela Rosa considers hiding from arrest

SEN. Ronald Dela Rosa is contemplating whether to go into hiding to evade arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC). In a phone interview, Dela Rosa said hiding is one of the "courses of action" he may consider if the ICC issues an arrest warrant for him, saying this would be similar to the actions taken by former senators Panfilo Lacson and Gringo Honasan. The lawmaker emphasized that if he does not see justice in this country, why would he surrender to authorities? But for now, Dela Rosa said he will wait for the Supreme Court's decision on his petition challenging the legality of the ICC's arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte. "We are again praying that the Supreme Court will be guided appropriately. We hope they will base their decision on the case's merits and refrain from getting involved in politics, as we know that they are a co-equal branch of government," Dela Rosa said in a separate interview on Thursday last week. Duterte and Dela Rosa, through their legal counsel Israelito Torreon, filed a petition for certiorari against Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla and others regarding actions taken against them by the Marcos administration. One of the petition's prayers is the grant of a temporary restraining order for Duterte's arrest, which the Supreme Court later denied. On Friday, on behalf of Duterte and Dela Rosa, Torreon filed a motion for reconsideration of the temporary restraining order denial. The motion for reconsideration urges the Supreme Court to exhaust all efforts to bring Duterte back to the Philippines. The former chief of the Philippine National Police said he plans to exhaust all legal avenues and remedies available to defend himself. One thing Dela Rosa is considering is hiding in the Senate for a long time. He said that Senate President Francis Escudero would be unable to do anything if he did this. Dela Rosa previously said that he was willing to submit to the ICC's arrest if an arrest warrant was issued for him and would accompany former president Duterte in The Hague.
