Megaworld head makes Forbes' prestigious list
MEGAWORLD President Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso has been included in Forbes' 50 over 50 Global list. Gutierrez-Alfonso is the only Filipino in the prestigious list. She replaced Andrew Tan as Megaworld president in June 2024 to lead one of the biggest call center landlords and hotel operations in the country. "She is driving a major expansion — Megaworld plans to spend some $6.1 billion [in] over five years to develop and expand its townships by 13 percent to 35 percent and beef up its hotel portfolio to 12,000 rooms across 27 properties," Forbes said. PHOTO FROM MEGAWORLD WEBSITE "Gutierrez-Alfonso's new role will be a challenge: borrowing costs remain high while rivals are aggressively constructing hotels in anticipation of a tourism rally," it added. Last November, Gutierrez-Alfonso was also the only Filipino in Forbes Asia's list of power businesswomen of 2024. Forbes' 50 over 50 Asia listed five Filipinas, led by Ayala Land Inc.'s (ALI) President and CEO Anna Ma. Margarita Dy, and Puregold Price Club's co-founder and Vice Chairman Susan Co. Co, who is the 12th richest person in Forbes' Philippines' 50 richest list, founded the country's affordable supermarket chain Puregold, which has grown popular with the middle class and has more than 300 stores nationwide. Dy became the first female CEO of ALI, when she took on the role last October. "Her rise comes as the company — the real estate arm of the Ayala Group — accelerates the launch of residential projects to meet surging housing demand," Forbes said of Dy. Dy oversaw ALI's luxury housing projects as chief operating officer and head of its residential business group. Other Filipinas in Forbes' 50 over 50 Asia are MediLink CEO and President Esther Go, actress Dolly de Leon and peace negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer. Go was credited for leading MediLink for about two decades, growing the company to connect more than 200,000 physicians with more than 2 million patients in the Philippines. De Leon gained international acclaim for her role in the 2022 film Triangle of Sadness, while Coronel-Ferrer was acknowledged for her efforts in conflict resolution and gender inclusivity in the Philippines.
