Amit wins Las Vegas 8-Ball tournament
FILIPINO cue artist Rubilen Amit bagged the Women's Challenge of Champions crown after beating Russia's Kristina Tkach in the finals between two World Pool Association (WPA) champions held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Amit, the 2024 Women's World 9-Ball champion, bested the reigning World 10-Ball titlist Tkach in the 8-Ball event via a 6-3 decision. In an interview with the Predator Pro Billiard Series, Amit admitted she hasn't played the 8-Ball in a while. "It's quite unusual, especially since I haven't played 8-Ball for like more than 10 years competitively. But it was interesting; it was fun," Amit said. She took home a $15,000 cash purse. "During the match, I've been praying a lot because it was the nerves. It was a lot like most of the matches were hill-hill in the sets, so I was just very grateful that I was able to pull it through," she added. In billiards parlance, hill-hill is a matchup situation where players or teams are on the hill, which is a point away from victory but the game could go either way. Amit is set to defend her title in the upcoming WPA World 9-Ball Championships slated for July 2 to 6 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. "I'm looking forward to the World Championships in July," she said. Meanwhile, Amit is also in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Women's Open being held at the same venue. The 43-year-old pride of Mandaue, Cebu, made it to the next round following her victory over Taiwan's Wang Wan-Ling in the quarterfinals.
