'I'm prepared for arrest order'
VICE President Sara Duterte said she is ready to face a possible arrest warrant against her from the International Criminal Court (ICC) but that would depend on whether it would be served in The Hague or in the Philippines. The vice president issued the statement after rumors that she would be among the next in line to be arrested by the ICC, along with former police chiefs Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa and retired general Oscar Albayalde. Both Dela Rosa and Albayalde have been mentioned in ICC documents, but the vice president has not been cited. "If the warrant is released while I am at The Hague, I will surely talk to another lawyer and ask what would be my options, but if the warrant is issued in the Philippines, let's see how the government responds," Duterte said during a virtual press briefing from The Hague. Duterte has previously denied all allegations made by self-confessed Davao Death Squad member Arturo Lascañas that she created "Oplan Tokhang" during her time as Davao City vice mayor and mayor. She dared Lascañas and those who were accusing her to file the proper charges in Philippine courts. The vice president also said that if her father is convicted for crimes against humanity, she urged supporters to blame her instead of blaming their lead lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, as she was the one who chose Kaufman as their father's lead counsel. Meanwhile, Duterte said that her impeachment trial will not be affected by the ICC trial as they are "separate" concerns. She said that the defense team for her impeachment trial is now "preparing the witnesses" who will testify for them. "Both will continue. The impeachment case will also continue, there will be a group of lawyers that will focus on the two cases," Duterte said. It also will not matter if the former president is not part of her legal team for the impeachment trial. The elder Duterte was named in her petition for certiorari and prohibition questioning the fourth impeachment case against her, alongside Lucas Carpio Jr., her father-in-law; former education undersecretary Michael Wesley Poa; and Sigfried Fortun, Gregorio Narvasa, Sheila Sison and Roberto Batongbacal of the Fortun, Narvasa and Salazar law firm.
