Año defends purchase of advanced weapons

NATIONAL Security Adviser Eduardo Año defended the Philippines' recent purchase of advanced defense systems, saying the country has the right to determine measures for safeguarding its security. "Just like any other nation, the procurement of defense systems, including the Typhon missile launcher, is a step toward strengthening our deterrence capabilities and ensuring that we are prepared to defend our territory when required," he said. Año issued the statement in response to speculations that the deployment of the Typhon missile system could exacerbate tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. The Typhon missile system is a modern defensive weapon designed to intercept and neutralize aerial threats. The acquisition of the weapon was part of the initiative to modernize the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), a priority outlined in the Revised AFP Modernization Program. This program, initiated in 1995 and revitalized in recent years, aims to enhance the country's defense capabilities amid evolving security challenges, including territorial disputes in the South China Sea. "In its long history as a sovereign nation, the Philippines has never provoked conflict, but we are always vigilant in defending our sovereignty against any potential threats," he said. Año urged all parties to respect the Philippines' sovereign right to determine its defense policies. "Our actions are meant to ensure peace and stability in the region, and we will never undermine the security of any nation. We encourage all parties to respect the Philippines' sovereign right to make decisions regarding its defense and security, and we remain committed to maintaining an environment of peace, cooperation and mutual respect in the region," he added.
