Group seeks to counter Chinese goals in WPS

SINGER-TURNED-ADVOCATE Rannie Raymundo, along with the civic organization Fraternal Order of Philippine Eagles, is leading the charge in launching a nationwide movement to unite Filipinos in response to the rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Raymundo said the initiative, called the WPS Eagles Movement, seeks to rekindle a sense of patriotism among Filipinos while galvanizing collective action to defend the country's territorial rights. With a foundation rooted in nationalism, patriotism, and humanitarian service — principles at the heart of the Philippine Eagles — the movement stands as a force against external intimidation and disinformation campaigns. The WPS Eagles Movement plans to conduct public awareness campaigns, including seminars, media initiatives, and cultural projects, to help inform citizens about the maritime dispute while inspiring patriotism. Raymundo said they would also focus on influencing policies, supporting fisherfolk rights and rallying international backing for the Philippines' claims. To combat disinformation, the movement will implement fact-checking initiatives and citizen training programs to counter propaganda. For Raymundo, this movement is personal. His father, Nilo Raymundo, the founding National Charter president of the Philippine Eagles, envisioned the organization as a driving force for national unity and resilience. Today, Rannie is determined to carry that vision forward by advocating for the protection of the Philippines' territorial claims in the WPS. "China is waging cognitive warfare against us — a psychological strategy designed to instill fear, manipulate perceptions, and spread false narratives. Their ultimate goal is to claim the West Philippine Sea without firing a single shot, through psychological intimidation and undermining our resolve," Raymundo said in an interview. Raymundo rose to fame for his chart-topping music and roles in Philippine cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, he channels his public influence toward pressing national issues. "I've been blessed with a platform as an artist," Raymundo said. "Now, I want to use it for something greater — something that affects the future of every Filipino. This movement is about securing our nation's future and standing firm in the face of external threats." The Fraternal Order of Philippine Eagles, founded in 1979 at the Asian Institute of Tourism in Quezon City, has long been dedicated to promoting devotion to God, country, and service. Through the WPS Eagles Movement, the organization is making a bold statement against disinformation and encouraging Filipinos to resist what they describe as China's aggressive tactics. Drawing on his father's legacy as the "King Eagle," Raymundo called for Filipinos to unite in the spirit of nationalism and solidarity. "My father was one of the original founding members of the Eagles, and his vision was always to inspire and unite the nation," Raymundo said. "I am proud to continue that legacy and to stand up for the sovereignty of our nation." The Philippine Eagles have earned national recognition for their contributions to nation-building, from disaster relief and educational programs to community development initiatives. With the launch of the WPS Eagles Movement, they aim to extend this legacy to the defense of maritime sovereignty and the collective strength of the Filipino people. "This is not just a territorial dispute — it's about safeguarding our identity as Filipinos. If we stand united, no amount of psychological warfare or bullying can break our determination," Raymundo said.
