Indie Rock group The Noisy have issued the “Grenadine” single and video to accompany the pre-order launch for October 24th’s ‘The Secret Ingredient Is Even More Meat,’ a deluxe edition of their acclaimed debut album. This expanded collection features new and reimagined songs and is accompanied by a series of new music videos.
Fronted by poet Sara Mae Henke (they/them), The Noisy has built a loyal following in Philadelphia’s music, drag and fashion scenes, collaborating with artists like Miss Thing, Avery Goodname (Ru Paul’s Drag Race), Wet Betty, and Jasmine Schulte (designer for Mannequin Pussy, Pom Pom Squad) for music video cameos, live variety show performances, and countless fabulous looks. This blend of music, performance art and queer nightlife make The Noisy a visual experience as much as a sonic one. In spring 2023, The Noisy released “Morricone” with a Strega Nona-meets-Clint Eastwood music video and launched a successful crowdfunding campaign for their debut album, The Secret Ingredient is More Meat, produced by Jacob Lawter (Slow and Steady) and in collaboration with Josh Sorrells (Easy Does It), Ash Baker (Bugs Baker), and Nyleen Perez (Pueblo Now).
This original self-released album was accompanied by videos for “Violet Lozenge,” “Backlit,” and “Ballerino,” which saw the band receive significant acclaim from outlets like WXPN, Post-Trash, The Alternative, Atwood Magazine, and WKDU.
The album’s deluxe edition was announced during Pride month with the “Twos” music video (directed by long-time collaborator Sam Cush). Taking the form of a vampy silent movie, this gothic glam production starred and featured practical effects from Philly drag talent.
“Grenadine” continues the collaboration with Cush and is again a celebration of queer community, but it offers something more nostalgic and scrappy than their prior work together.
“The director, Sam Cush, and I came of age hanging around downtown Annapolis, where I worked at a tourist trap coffee shop and Sam’s parents moved. It’s where I found my first artist community in my coworkers who were writers and musicians and illustrators, where I saw live drag the first time, where Sam and I late-night-drove, where I snuck onto the best rooftops. This music video is a love letter to Annapolis, this town of annual croquet matches between Johnnies and midshipmen, cobblestone mornings with streams of last night’s liquor smell, watching boats round Ego Alley. Before I left for college, my coworkers threw a house party for me, and I remember feeling so loved, then driving back over the bridge home afterwards and crying with the windows down because I didn’t want to leave. All the things my teenage self desperately needed— queer friendship, a better haircut, to get to come back to Annapolis—filming this music video affirmed I have now, and then some. The song, unlike any of the other ones I’ve written, jumped into my head and insisted on being written. I had the melody and the rhythm, but figuring out the lyrics about this place and these people I loved was tedious. I remember Sam coming to visit me in Knoxville, and we co-worked, and I got the lyrics down finally. It makes sense to me that this song and its visual world took the friendship of another person who loves this place like I do in order to find its final shape.” – Sara Mae (they/them)
In addition to the upcoming deluxe reissue, The Noisy are currently working on LP2, while Sara Mae also recently published their award-winning second poetry chapbook, ‘Phantasmagossip,’ through YesYes Books, which they promoted with a multi-state reading tour.
The Noisy’s next show is at The Dolphin in Philadelphia with KulfiGirls on August 28th.
Lyrics:
“It was the smoke breaks by the mop heads
It was Mary’s blondes in a nest on her head
Polka dot red, microwave reflection
Fire escape beer, rooftop champagne
It was the view of Ego Alley off of Main
Tourists below us, sand on the ribs of highways
Sixteen & see-through, crashing ghost tours
Listening to the sounds of the city through
Twenty-somethings’ windows
Sixteen in platform shoes
Suspended then dumped too
Fortune was looking for me
And I was looking for you
It was taking shots in the backroom
It was pink hairpins & getting off to
Hard rock because she liked it too
New Year’s Eve we were all tipsy
From the rooftop we could smell
Gasoline, grenadine
& the bleach from mopping
She always said they come too
They always come back too soon
What you are looking for is also looking for you
Sixteen & see-through, crashing ghost tours
Listening to the sounds of the city through
Twenty-somethings’ windows”
