President extends term of PNP chief
(UPDATE) PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has extended the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Rommel Francisco Marbil by four months, Malacañang said Thursday. The president, through Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, signed on Feb. 4 a memorandum extending Marbil's term, which would take effect on Feb. 7, the day he reached the mandatory retirement age of 56. The memorandum was addressed to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla. Earlier, Marcos said a change in the PNP's leadership "would not be good for stability," with the May 12 elections approaching. Marbil, the 30th PNP chief, is a member of the Philippine Military Academy's Class of 1991. He was appointed on April 1, 2024. Before that, Marbil headed the Directorate for Comptrollership — in charge of the financial management of the police organization — from May 2, 2023 to April 1, 2024. He was police regional director for Eastern Visayas from Aug. 8, 2022 to May 2, 2023 and the Highway Patrol Group director from Nov. 19, 2021 to Aug. 8, 2022. Marbil was chief of staff of the Civil Security Group from 2019 to 2020. He once served as the provincial director of Agusan del Norte from 2014 until 2015. From 2006 to 2007, he commanded the Presidential Protection Security Force of the United Nations Contingent in Liberia.
