AFP steps up acquisition of missile defense systems

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Sunday said it plans to acquire more sophisticated missile systems, warships and multi-role fighter jets to complete its air and missile defense integration program. The acquisition plan was outlined by AFP chief of staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. during his participation in the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, India, last March. "We are looking at acquiring more missile systems to complete the integration of our air and missile defense. Alongside this, we will be purchasing more warships and multi-role fighter jets to build a strong and reliable deterrent force," he said. Brawner's attendance at the New Delhi event marked the first time the AFP participated in the annual geopolitics and geoeconomics conference. The AFP's modernization road map is anchored on a long-term strategy to develop both capability and deterrence. Brawner underscored the importance of strategic partnerships, particularly with India, noting the defense collaboration exemplified by the BrahMos missile system. "India is a vital partner. Beyond procurement, we are looking into joint manufacturing, technology transfer and local production in the Philippines to support our growing defense industry," he added. Brawner on Wednesday stressed the importance of a new defense strategy integrating internal security and territorial defense. Last week, United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth vowed to provide a sophisticated US Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, an anti-ship missile system intended to improve interoperability and strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.
