VALENZUELA Mayor Weslie Gatchalian announced on Friday that the local government has just launched its mega pumping station worth P400 million that covers two adjoining flood-prone villages in the city.
Expected to significantly minimize flooding, the 25th pumping station built by the city government, residents in Barangay Veinte Reales and Barangay Lingunan would now have reason to rejoice, Gatchalian said.
Interviewed by The Manila Times via Viber, the city chief executive admitted that due to climate change and global warming, some parts of Valenzuela have been prone to flooding, especially the low-lying and catch basin-villages in District 1 — particularly the two villages.
"With our mega pumping station now operational since it was opened on September 19, flooding in these areas would now be largely reduced," Gatchalian said.
It was learned that 70 percent of the waters in the city or 12 of its villages including Bignay, Punturin, Lawang Bato, Canumay East, Canumay West and Paso de Blas, portions from Lawa and Caingin in nearby Meycauayan City, Bulacan and some parts from North Caloocan pass through the creeks of the villages of Veinte Reales and Lingunan.
"This time with our newly opened mega pumping station, flooding particularly in Luis Francisco Subdivision in Veinte Reales and Rubber Master Road in Lingunan and other nearby downstream villages would be lessened," Gatchalian added.
The Veinte Reales – Lingunan pumping station has four submersible 2.0m/s pumps — 8m/s in total, four units of 500-kva generator sets and two floodgates that quickly remove sewage or wastewater, the city's public information officer, Mara Salazar-Ignacio said.
Gatchalian said that the pumping station is just one of the city government's flood-control projects and they were working for more.
"Since flooding in some areas in the city is inevitable, we are continuously fixing our main roads as well as street or secondary roads. This project will be all over Valenzuela," he said.
He appealed to his constituents to cooperate with the local government by properly disposing of their garbage instead of wantonly throwing them into creeks, canals and other waterways all over the city.
