With under two months to go until Joyland Festival Jakarta on 22-24 November 2024, Plainsong Live has announced the third and final phase of artists and attractions that will make GBK Baseball Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta the place to be for music lovers from Indonesia and abroad.
Following the previous announcement of St. Vincent, AIR, Bombay Bicycle Club and many more, the South Korea-meets-Taiwan indie rock team-up of Hyukoh & Sunset Rollercoaster will grace the Saturday night headlining slot. Their joint show will feature songs such as “Young Man”, “Glue” and “Antenna” from AAA, their collaboration album that was released in July. In addition, expect classics from each band’s respective back catalogues including Hyukoh’s “TOMBOY” and “Comes and Goes” and of course “Vanilla” and “My Jinji” by Sunset Rollercoaster. Joyland Festival Jakarta will also be the only outdoor festival date for Hyukoh & Sunset Rollercoaster’s AAA tour. According to Joyland Festival Program Director Ferry Dermawan, “We’re grateful to have two of Asia’s biggest indie rock bands right now perform at Joyland Festival! Their decision to make this collaboration album has proven to be exploratory for them and exciting for fans.”
Also coming in overseas to join the Joyland Festival Jakarta 2024 lineup will be Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band from Phetchabun, Thailand who blend psychedelic rock with Thai folk music; Seoul, South Korea electronic music trio Idiotape; Cuban-born, France-based tropical music DJ Cami Layé Okún; roots reggae DJ Danniella Dee from Coventry, United Kingdom who is also part of the dub sound system trio Sisters in Dub; and Berlin, Germany-based Middle Eastern music DJ and record label founder of the same name Habibi Funk. All five are among the acts showcased on the Lily Pad Stage, which for this year has been curated by longtime Joyland Festival artistic collaborators White Shoes & The Couples Company (WSATCC), who are also performing. “In curating the Lily Pad Stage, we wanted to share our joy and artistic ideas,” says the Jakarta-based indie pop sextet. “We’ve chosen friends whom we’ve met in our journeys, handpicked newcomers, and those whose musical references, authenticity, energy and spirit we admire.”
White Shoes & The Couples Company’s picks for The Lily Pad Stage – which is going to be set up as a stage for band performances and a bar for the DJs – will also feature the homegrown talents of Asa Kusumah, Bosborot, The Cottons, Drizzly, Jeslla, Plastic and Prontaxan. Meanwhile, Jakarta rock titans .FEAST will make their Joyland Festival debut and complete another strong local roster.
The 2024 edition of Joyland Festival Jakarta will also feature an all-new batch of stand-up comedy talent on the Shrooms Garden stand-up comedy stage hosted and curated by Soleh Solihun, namely Musdalifah Basri, Nopek Novian, Rigen Rakelna, Adi Arkiang, Alip Baihak, Alwi Shihab, Boby Al Mahbub, Deki Sutrisna, Ilham Abay, Rahmet Ababil, Fikri Rahmat and Fico Fachriza.
Elsewhere, the White Peacock family activity area sees its biggest expansion yet as it occupies the Indoor Tennis Stadium with a range of fun programs including workshops for making art journal collages, recycled phone straps, and weaving and painting Japanese-style notebook covers. The little ones will also get to play with several special guests, in which they’ll hear Sal Priadi tell stories, sing with Tiny Tunes with Maliq & D’Little Essentials and Apri Mela Prawidiyanti of WSATCC will direct a choir of HighScope elementary school students. “With the vast space, we’ve also added new features such as a toddler area, a larger nursing room and an expanded area for workshops and other activities that children, teens and adults can participate in,” says White Peacock curator Lintang Sunarta.
Along with the Cinerillaz outdoor cinema curated by acclaimed writer-director Joko Anwar that will screen short films previously shown at international film festivals, the selection of local food and goods vendors available at the Joyland Village Foods & Goods Market, the final round of the Joyland Checkmate! chess tournament and much more, this is shaping up to be the most exciting
