Group warns public vs toxic products
WITH the Halloween season approaching, watchdog group BAN Toxics on Friday cautioned the public against buying costumes and decorations containing toxic substances, such as lead and cadmium, which are both chemicals with "major public health concerns." According to the group's market monitoring, they purchased six Halloween masks and tested them using a Vanta C Series HH XRF Analyzer. Analysis results indicate that the masks contained lead levels of 1,130 parts per million (ppm) and cadmium levels of up to 160 ppm. They also said all the masks did not meet the present product labeling standards mandated by RA 10620, or the Toy and Game Safety Labeling Act of 2013. "Parents should be wary of the creepy and scary presence of toxic chemicals in children's products that may lead to various health problems," BAN Toxics campaigner Thony Dizon said in a statement. Under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Chemical Control Order for Lead and Lead Compounds, the use of lead in the sale and production of toys and school supplies is strictly prohibited.
