Cager John Amores surrenders to police

(UPDATE) NORTHPORT guard John Amores and his brother surrendered to the police on Friday after being involved in a shooting incident in Laguna. Initial investigation showed that Amores had a heated argument with another player identified as Lee Cacalda during a basketball game in Barangay Salac. Maj. Bob Louis Ordiz said the two left the area on their respective motorcycles to fight elsewhere. When they reached Barangay Maytalang Uno in Lumban, Amores allegedly opened fire at Cacalda with an unknown firearm but missed. A CCTV footage showed that at about 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Amores, after alighting a motorcycle driven by a friend, seemingly shot Cacalda to the shock of everyone walking by the main road, which is part of the Manila East Road highway network. Police report said Amores threw the gun away. The two brothers decided to surrender due to threats they were allegedly getting from Cacalda's friends. Amores, who refused to comment on the incident, was scheduled for inquest proceedings for attempted murder. Amores' team Batang Pier has yet to issue a statement on the case. Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner Willie Marcial expressed regret over the incident. "This is a matter subject of investigation by the police, and we cannot comment on it. But we are saddened by such an unfortunate incident," he said. The 6-foot-2 Amores was involved in a punching incident during a National Collegiate Athletic Association game between Jose Rizal University (JRU) and the College of St. Benilde in 2022. The collegiate league and JRU issued an indefinite suspension to Amores for his actions, prompting him to turn pro. Already apologetic and has since patched things up with the Blazers, the former Heavy Bomber showed signs of a changed man during his stints with the Zamboanga Valientes in the Asean Basketball League and the Muntinlupa Cagers in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League the following year. NorthPort drafted him in the sixth round of the 2023 PBA Draft and was given some playing time at the shooting guard position. WITH PHILIPPINE NEWS AGENCY
