Akbayan lawmaker to fight rights abusers
AKBAYAN Rep. Percival Cendaña said that his party would intensify the fight against human rights abusers after being sworn into office by Speaker Martin Romualdez at the House of Representatives on Wednesday. "Akbayan will hold those who have committed human rights violations and plundered the public coffers, especially those from the previous administration, accountable for their crimes," Cendaña said. Akbayan was a known critic of former president Rodrigo Duterte and current Vice President Sara Duterte. "We will not allow the wanton abuse of our rights and democratic institutions to go unpunished. The Dutertes and their allies should get ready, as well as the abusers and the corrupt," he added in Filipino. Cendaña, a former commissioner of the National Youth Commission, thanked their supporters and allies for Akbayan's return to the House of Representatives. "We recognize Akbayan's historic return to Congress, given the difficulties we and other democratic and progressive party-list groups have faced. While many groups worked hard to return, only Akbayan was fortunate to win and return to Congress," he said. On Wednesday, the Commission on Elections officially proclaimed Akbayan as a winning party-list group during the 2022 national polls, entitling it to occupy the 63rd and last slot for party-list organizations at the House of Representatives.
