The Philippines has the highest number of internet users who watch online video content globally, according to the Digital 2024 Global Overview Report.

Meanwhile, around 97.2% of Filipinos aged 16 to 64 years are watching any kind of video each week, based on the report put together by creative agency We Are Social together with media intelligence company Meltwater.

This was based on the findings of a survey conducted by the audience research company GWI during the third quarter of 2023, the We Are Social and Meltwater report said.

The Philippines was followed by the following countries with the highest percentage of online video watchers:

  • Mexico – 97.0%
  • South Africa – 97.0%
  • Indonesia – 96.9%
  • Ghana – 96.8%
  • Brazil – 96.4%
  • Colombia – 96.3%
  • Morocco – 96.2%
  • Turkey – 96.2%
  • UAE – 96.2%

The Philippines ranked third for the daily time spent using the internet with 8 hours and 52 minutes, just behind South Africa with 9 hours and 24 minutes and Brazil with 9 hours and 13 minutes.

YouTube, TikTok, Netflix, Hotstar, and MX Player are the most-used video-centric entertainment apps on mobile phones globally, the We Are Social and Meltwater report said, citing September-November 2023 data from Data AI Intelligence.

According to the Digital 2024 report, media users have passed the 5 billion mark, with annual user growth still above 5%. However, the overall digital growth has slowed over recent years.

“But this is to be expected as internet users reach ‘supermajority’,” the report said.

While almost two-thirds of the world’s total population is already online, the report said 2.7 billion people are still “unconnected” at the start of 2024. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
