Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson George Garcia said Sunday the poll body has issued show cause orders against more than 5,000 candidates for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
(We’ve issued 5,200 show cause orders and more than 1,000 candidates have responded. Of those 1,000, based on the initial assessment, about 300 candidates are ripe for disqualification.)
As of October 6, the Comelec Task Force Anti-Epal has filed 82 petitions for disqualification. Cases have also been filed against 10 candidates for alleged vote-buying.
Garcia said decisions on these disqualification cases will be out before the BSKE on October 30.
He explained that filing of cases against erring candidates will push through despite the accused answering or not to the show cause orders.
